The Complete Guide to Flyer Sizes
Standard flyer sizes at a glance
All standard flyer sizes in the UK are based on the A-series paper system, where each size is exactly half the previous one. Here are the sizes you will encounter most often:
A4 (210mm x 297mm)
The same size as a standard sheet of printer paper. A4 flyers offer the most space for content and are ideal for menus, price lists, event programmes, and any design that needs room for detailed information.
A4 is less suited to casual distribution (handing out on the street, leaving on counters) because of its size. It works best when given directly to someone or included in a pack.
A5 (148mm x 210mm)
Half the size of A4 and the most popular flyer size overall. A5 strikes the balance between enough space for your message and a manageable size for distribution. It fits easily in a bag, through a letterbox, and on a counter display.
A5 is the default choice for event promotion, service advertising, takeaway menus, and general marketing flyers.
A6 (105mm x 148mm)
Postcard-sized. A6 flyers are compact and cost-effective, making them ideal for high-volume distribution. They fit in a pocket, display neatly in a business card holder, and work well as handouts at events.
The smaller size means less room for content, so A6 works best with a single clear message and call to action.
DL (99mm x 210mm)
DL stands for "dimension lengthwise" and measures roughly a third of A4. This tall, narrow format is the standard size for envelopes and fits neatly in a #10 window envelope.
DL is the go-to format for rack cards (the kind you see in hotel lobbies and tourist offices), direct mail inserts, and slim promotional flyers. Its distinctive shape stands out from standard A-size flyers.
Which size should you choose?
Consider three things: how much content you need to include, how the flyer will be distributed, and your budget.
- Lots of content (menu, price list, event schedule): go with A4 or A5
- Street distribution or letterbox drops: A5 or A6 are easiest to handle
- Direct mail or envelope inserts: DL fits standard envelopes perfectly
- Budget-conscious high volume: A6 gives you the lowest cost per unit
- Counter displays and rack cards: DL or A6 fit standard holders
Single-sided or double-sided?
Double-sided printing costs very little extra and gives you twice the space. For most flyers, printing both sides is worth it. Use the front for your main message and eye-catching design, and the reverse for supporting details, a map, terms and conditions, or a coupon.
