Artwork Guidelines

Follow these guidelines to make sure your artwork prints correctly first time. Our pre-press team checks every file, but getting it right from the start means a faster turnaround.

File formats

We accept PDF, JPEG, and PNG files. PDF is the preferred format for anything with text, as it preserves fonts and layout exactly as you intended.

When exporting a PDF, use the PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 preset. This ensures CMYK compatibility and embeds all fonts automatically.

Resolution

All artwork should be a minimum of 300dpi at the finished print size. Images below 200dpi will appear noticeably blurry, especially on text and fine detail.

Web images are typically 72dpi and are not suitable for print. Always use high-resolution source images.

Colour mode: CMYK

Supply artwork in CMYK colour mode. Screens use RGB, but printers use CMYK. If you supply RGB artwork, colours will shift during conversion. Bright greens, vivid blues, and neon colours are the most affected.

In Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, set your colour mode under File > Document Color Mode > CMYK. In Photoshop, use Image > Mode > CMYK Color.

Bleed: 3mm on all sides

Bleed is the area of your design that extends beyond the trim line. It prevents white edges appearing if the cut shifts slightly during trimming.

Set your document size to the finished size plus 3mm on each side. For example, a standard business card (85mm x 55mm) should be set up as 91mm x 61mm.

Safe zone

Keep all important text and logos at least 3mm inside the trim line. This is the safe zone. Anything closer to the edge risks being cut off.
