Choosing the Right Paper Stock for Your Print

Why paper stock matters

The paper you choose changes everything about how your print is perceived. A flimsy flyer feels disposable; a thick, laminated card feels premium. The right paper stock reinforces your brand message and encourages people to keep your print rather than bin it.

Understanding GSM

GSM stands for grams per square metre, and it measures paper weight (not thickness, although heavier papers are generally thicker). Here is a rough guide to common weights:

  • 120gsm - Slightly thicker than standard copier paper. Good for booklet inner pages and high-volume leaflets.
  • 170gsm - The standard choice for flyers and leaflets. Sturdy enough to hold, light enough to post in bulk.
  • 250gsm - A mid-weight card. Works well for premium flyers, menus, and lightweight postcards.
  • 350gsm - Proper card stock. The go-to for postcards, business cards, and anything that needs to feel substantial.
  • 450gsm - Our thickest card. Premium business cards that make a statement.

Silk vs uncoated

Silk paper has a smooth, slightly sheen finish. Colours appear vibrant and images look sharp. It is the default choice for most commercial print, from flyers to business cards. Silk finishes also accept lamination well.

Uncoated paper has a natural, textured feel. It is easier to write on (useful for coupons, forms, or postcards with a writeable area) and gives a more organic, craft-inspired look. Colours appear slightly softer on uncoated stock.

Lamination options

Lamination adds a thin plastic film over your print, enhancing durability and feel. The two main options are:

  • Matt lamination - A smooth, non-reflective finish that feels soft and premium. Popular for business cards and presentation folders.
  • Gloss lamination - A shiny, reflective finish that makes colours pop. Good for promotional flyers and postcards where vibrancy matters.

Recommended stocks by product

  • Business cards: 450gsm silk with matt lamination for a premium feel, or 350gsm uncoated for a natural look.
  • Flyers: 170gsm silk for standard distribution, 250gsm silk for a sturdier option.
  • Postcards: 350gsm or 450gsm silk. Thick enough to feel substantial in the post.
  • Posters: 170gsm silk for indoor displays. Lightweight and easy to mount.
