Business Card Printing Belfast: What to Look For
Why it matters who prints your business cards
A business card is often the first physical thing someone holds with your name on it. If the card feels cheap, the print is off-centre, or the colours are wrong, that becomes the first impression of your business. Getting it right does not have to be expensive, but it does mean choosing a printer who pays attention.
Whether you are a sole trader in East Belfast or a growing firm in the city centre, here is what to look for.
Paper quality
The weight and finish of the card stock makes an immediate difference. Most standard business cards are printed on 350gsm or 400gsm card. Anything below 300gsm will feel flimsy. A good printer will let you choose your weight and finish (matt, gloss, or uncoated) rather than giving you whatever is cheapest.
Ask for a sample if you are not sure. Any decent printer will be happy to send you one, or let you pop in and feel the stock in person. If you are in Belfast, that is easy enough to arrange.
Print quality and colour accuracy
Digital printing and litho printing produce different results. For short runs (under 1,000 cards), digital is the norm and the quality is excellent on modern machines. For larger runs, litho can be more cost-effective and delivers very consistent colour.
If your brand colours are critical (and they should be), check that the printer can work with Pantone references or at least match a CMYK breakdown reliably. Some online printers will shift your colours slightly and you will not know until the cards arrive. A local printer can show you a proof on the actual stock before the full run goes ahead.
Artwork checks and proofing
Mistakes happen. A phone number with a missing digit, a logo that is too close to the edge, a file saved in the wrong colour space. A printer that checks your artwork before printing can catch these problems. A printer that does not will print whatever you send and leave you with a box of unusable cards.
Look for a printer that offers a free artwork check or a digital proof approval step. It takes a few minutes but saves a lot of waste.
Turnaround time
Most Belfast printers can turn around a standard business card order in three to five working days. Some offer next-day or same-day options at a premium. If you are ordering for an event or a meeting, check the turnaround before you place the order, not after.
Be wary of printers who promise very fast turnaround on everything. Speed is only useful if the quality holds up. A card printed in a rush on the wrong stock is worse than no card at all.
Delivery and collection
If you are ordering from a Belfast-based printer, you may have the option to collect in person. This saves on delivery costs and means you can check the cards before you leave. For businesses across Northern Ireland, local delivery is usually quick and affordable.
Online-only printers based in England or overseas can be cheaper per unit, but delivery adds time and cost. Returns are also more complicated if something is wrong. For a first order, there is a lot to be said for working with someone local.
Price transparency
The price of a business card order depends on quantity, paper stock, finish, and any extras (rounded corners, spot UV, foiling). A good printer will show you the price clearly before you commit. If you have to email for a quote on a standard product, that is often a sign that the pricing is not straightforward.
Cheap is not always cheerful. A box of 500 cards for a few pounds usually means thin stock, poor colour, and no quality control. You will end up ordering again from somewhere better, so you have spent the money twice.
What about online printers?
Online printers have their place. They are convenient, often cheap, and fine for straightforward jobs. But they cannot show you a physical sample, they will not check your artwork in detail, and if something goes wrong, you are dealing with a call centre.
For a first order, or for anything where the finish and feel matter, a local printer gives you more control. You can see the stock, approve a proof, and talk to someone who understands what you need.
Getting started
If you are ready to order, start with the basics: how many cards you need, what information goes on them, and whether you have a design ready or need help. Most printers, including us, can work with a finished design file or help you put one together.
