5 Business Card Design Tips That Actually Work
1. Keep it simple
The most effective business cards are the simplest. Include your name, job title, phone number, email, and website. That is it. Resist the temptation to add your full address, fax number, social media handles, and a QR code all at once.
A clean, uncluttered card is easier to read and feels more professional. If someone needs your address, they will look it up on your website.
2. Use hierarchy to guide the eye
Not all information is equally important. Your name should be the most prominent element, followed by your role, then contact details. Use font size, weight, and spacing to create a clear visual hierarchy.
A common mistake is making everything the same size. When nothing stands out, nothing gets read.
3. Leave enough white space
White space (or negative space) is not wasted space. It gives your design room to breathe, makes text easier to read, and signals quality. The most premium-feeling cards tend to have the most white space.
Keep text at least 5mm from the card edge for comfortable readability, and resist the urge to fill every millimetre.
4. Choose your font carefully
Stick to one or two typefaces maximum. A common approach is a sans-serif font for your name and headings, paired with the same font (or a complementary one) at a lighter weight for contact details.
Avoid novelty fonts, script fonts at small sizes, and anything that sacrifices readability for style. Your card needs to be legible at arm's length.
For body text on a business card, 7-8pt is a comfortable minimum. Anything smaller becomes hard to read, especially for older recipients.
5. Pick the right stock
Paper choice has a bigger impact on perception than most people realise. A 450gsm silk card with matt lamination feels noticeably different from a 300gsm card with no coating. The extra weight and smooth finish signal quality before anyone reads a word.
For a natural, writeable feel, try 350gsm uncoated. For maximum impact, go with 450gsm silk and matt lamination. Both are available from Belfast Print in quantities from 50 to 5,000. Browse our business cards to see all available options.
Bonus: use both sides
You are paying for a double-sided card either way (the cost difference is minimal). Use the reverse for a brand colour, pattern, tagline, or map. A well-designed reverse adds visual interest and gives your card a finishing touch that single-sided designs lack.
